Case Study: Sensory Circuit at Dromore Central

Background
Dromore Central Primary School has had a sensory motor room for several years, managed by Mrs. Amanda Dillon, the Learning Support Teacher. Recognising the benefits of additional sensory activities for students, the school wanted to enhance their sensory motor room by creating a sensory circuit in the corridor leading to it. This extension aimed to provide children with a sensory trail to help them focus and regulate before engaging in more structured exercises in the sensory motor room.
Inspiration
The idea of a sensory circuit was introduced to Dromore Central Primary School by another school that had successfully implemented a similar project. After observing the positive impact on students, Mrs. Dillon and her team decided that a sensory circuit would be a valuable addition to their school environment.

Collaboration with Creative Activity
Dromore Central PS reached out to Creative Activity to explore the possibility of designing and installing a sensory circuit. Creative Activity visited the school, reviewed the existing sensory motor room and the corridor, and developed several bespoke design concepts tailored to the specific needs of the school.

Implementation:
The chosen design was installed over the Christmas break, allowing the students to start using the new sensory circuit immediately upon their return to school. The installation was seamlessly integrated into the school environment, creating a dedicated space for sensory activities, brain breaks, and movement breaks.
Benefits and Impact
The sensory circuit has proven to be beneficial for a wide range of students, not just those with sensory processing issues. It provides:
- Movement Breaks: Allowing students to take short breaks to move and reset during class.
- Sensory Input: Helping students who need extra sensory stimulation.
- Focus and Regulation: Assisting students in regulating their senses and preparing for structured activities in the sensory motor room.

Understanding Sensory Circuits:
Sensory Circuits are structured activities designed to assist children with sensory processing issues. These circuits help children regulate and organise their senses, making them an effective tool in school settings. The benefits of sensory circuits include:
- Integration into Curriculum: They can be seamlessly incorporated into the school day, providing a structured approach to sensory integration.
- Readiness and Convenience: The pre-set setup of the sensory circuit ensures it is always ready for use without additional preparation.
- Enhanced Learning Experience: Brain breaksand sensory processing facilitated by the sensory circuit help students reset and refocus, improving their overall learning experience.

Conclusion
The bespoke Sensory Circuit designed and installed by Creative Activity at Dromore Central Primary School has become a valuable addition to the school’s environment. It supports a wide range of students, providing them with necessary sensory input and movement breaks, enhancing their ability to focus and learn effectively. Mrs. Amanda Dillon and her team are delighted with the results and the positive impact on their students.
